For those in this group who may be scientifically minded, I wanted to make everyone aware about an upcoming event in the lj community convert_me
that will give us ample opportunity to counter some right wing talking points, in good spirit of course.
It looks like it should turn out to be a lot of fun, regardless of what side one may be on. It also looks to have been started in the spirit of good humor and I think that is a good way to approach such subjects. I intend to join and partake and I hope to see everyone there.

Asshat award #1
the first 'official' asshat award to the easiet target I could find:
Rev. Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church
As per custom: some innapropriate quotes will follow below:
"If you got to castrate your miserable self with a piece of rusty barb wire, do it."
"Hear the word of the LORD, America, fag-enablers are worse than the fags themselves, and will be punished in the everlasting lake of fire!"
"You telling these miserable, Hell-bound, bath house-wallowing, anal-copulating fags that God loves them!? You have bats in the belfry!"
"American Veterans are to blame for the fag takeover of this nation. They have the power in their political lobby to influence the zeitgeist, get the fags out of the military, and back in the closet where they belong!"
"Not only is homosexuality a sin, but anyone who supports fags is just as guilty as they are. You are both worthy of death."
WEEEE! doesn't he sound like someone who took gods commandment of 'love thy neighbor' to heart!
I've posted about him and his website (www.godhatesfags.com...which is actually down at this moment in time...but is worth checking out...you can see the mirror site here: http://www.godhatesamerica.com/ghfmir/main/index.html
) before. He is one of the most offensive peole I can think of, and his views are terribly scewed.
you can also see his other website: http://www.godhatesamerica.com/
where you can get an even better image of this man. he makes such touching comments as "God destroyed the WTC to punish America! Deal with it!"
I have actually never met this man before, despite my attendance of many pride parades. I really, really do want to see him in person at some point in my life. I feel like he can't possibly exist....that no one can be that hateful and that dum at the same time.
What really scares me are his cronies though- he has roped whole families- even children! - into his cause. This is something that makes me want to act. The second he comes to within 50 miles of me...i'm going to counterprotest. I think after seeing these sights...you guys should do the same.

I was reading The New York Times book reviews and I saw Ann Coulter's How To Talk To A Liberal, If You Must. I couldn't believe that anyone was childish enough to title a book that and expect to be taken seriously. I then did some more research on her and Bill O'Reilly. I really joined to observe, I'm still really learning about them, and forming opinions. I'm very interested to hear your opinions on them.

Hooray- Catholic colleges against Ann Coulter!
You know you're an asshat when Catholic college presidents think that you're an evil bitch.
St. Thomas president denounces Ann Coulter's speech as hateful
Matt McKinney, Star Tribune
April 26, 2005 DEASE0426
The president of the University of St. Thomas on Monday condemned a speech at the Catholic school last week by conservative author Ann Coulter, saying "such hateful speech vulgarizes our culture and goes against everything the University of St. Thomas stands for."
The Rev. Dennis Dease wrote in Bulletin Today, a university newsletter, that "although her presentation may have been meant as an 'act' or a 'shtick' to entertain by provoking those who disagree, such behavior unfortunately contributes to the growing dark side of our culture -- a disrespect for persons and their sincerely held beliefs."
Coulter spoke at the university on April 18. She was a guest of the school's chapter of the College Republicans and a student newspaper, the Standard, but neither organization paid her speaking fee. That was covered by the Young America's Foundation, a Herndon, Va., organization that bills itself as an outreach program for conservative youth.
A St. Thomas student who heard Coulter said he understood how her comments could have hurt others.
"I knew kind of what she stood for," said Dominic Kramer, a senior political science major. "One thing that disappointed me overall, from both sides, was the feeling of tension in the room. I think Ann was very well aware of that. That's what feeds her fire, if you will."
Coulter spoke at St. Olaf College the day before she visited St. Thomas. The president of St. Olaf, Christopher Thomforde, said students told him that her comments were inflammatory for little reason.
"You'd want a kind of intersection between faithfulness and respect and commitment along with intelligent critique and analysis," he said Monday night. "The issues are highly complicated, and to just sort of incite people is not helpful."
Coulter's booking agent, Walker Hayes, declined Monday to contact her for comment. "We get this sort of stuff all the time, so we're not the ones to trouble her with that," he said.

The Ultimate Idiot
This morning I found myself having trouble differentiating between reality and my own sense of sarcasm. Perhaps it was the news that the Ultimate Warrior of minor WWF (or whatever the fuck, I never really liked wrestling)fame is in fact a lunatic, out of his mind, right-winger the likes of which would make even Ann Coulter and Tom Delay cringe...Well maybe not Coulter, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if she were caught giving the UT blowjobs behind a Dairy Queen in some Nebraska backwater.
Anyway, in case you forgot who the Ultimate warrior is, here is a picture of the leering loon. <
To be honest, When I read the news that I am about to relate to you, I had to dig deep into the darkest recesses of my childhood mind to pull forth a memory of who the Ultimate Warrior was. As I stated previously I never liked wrestling so my Ultimate Warrior schema consisted of fuzzy memories left over from the Super Nintendo game Royal Rumble. In many ways I wish the Democratic Underground had never done a story on this living manifestation of the Baseball Steroid allegations. But then again, to paraphrase the immortal words of Mad Magazine, this is "comedy in the jugular," and when mixed with politics it can be a heady brew indeed. Enough Stalling.
So according to last week's Top Ten Conservative Idiots column on democraticunderground.com, the University of Connecticut chapter of the College Republicans, (and CR's are known for their evenhanded, unbiased behavior the likes of which include setting up White Pride scholarships, having anti-affirmative action bake sales and following orders given by Ann Coulter to strong-arm protesters at a speech like so many brown shirts.
) invited The Ultimate Warrior to speak at the campus about conservative ideology. Apparently The Warrior's comments which included such gems as, Queering don't make the world work." and an instruction to an Iranian student to "get a towel."
did not go over well on the diverse campus.
The behavior of the of the Warrior was so outrageous that it forced to UofConn GOP to issue several formal apologies to various offended groups on the campus in what seemingly looked like a genuine display of remorse or at least embarrassment. And what more can one ask for when it comes to the GOP, young or otherwise.
Now one would have thought that after such outbursts, the Ultimate Warrior would have receded back into whatever toothpaste hawking existence he now resides in. Not so. You see after the story "hit the press," somethingawful.com did an editorial piece on the antics of the Warrior in which it referred to him as a "crazy racist." Worried that somethingawful had defamed his sterling name and character the Warrior had his "Communications Director," Chris Lewis, threaten the Webmaster of the site with a lawsuit. When it became clear that Rich Kyanka (the webmaster) would not be cowed by what did indeed turn out to be empty threats, Lewis presumably at the behest of UT himself, resorted to behaviors akin to stalking and creepy threats. Actions included; Calling Kyanka's father and labeling him a "candy-ass," mentioning his wife by name and issuing this statement for the ages. ...A terrible shame that you don't have the balls to claim your own name, little man. Speaking of little man, I've also managed to track down a couple of pictures of you, which I've attached to this email. You should really spend less time typing away at your computer and a little more time in the gym. Those arms of yours look like spaghetti. And those rosy-red cheeks of yours are quite manly, as well. Here is the full text of the e-mail exchange."
And so ends the hilarious expose` on the Ultimate Warrior. With heroic athletes like UT, who needs the likes of Curt Schilling and Derek Jeter. They're probably just "queers" anyway.
Cross-posted here and there.

I have to write a speech for my English class on a topic of "injustice." Now, obviously, there are innumerable examples of injustice in the world, but I couldn’t think of a topic to do that I haven’t already beaten to death in terms of debating, discussing, thinking about - you know, all those contemporary issues like abortion, capital punishment etc. I finally decided to do a general "injustice in the justice system" topic, in which I can bring up basically whatever I want - capital punishment, the police’s discrimination against minorities, the fact that "innocent until proven guilty" is a joke, etc etc etc... I was just wondering if anyone could give me any ideas or an angle to take. Any input at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Old story re; Rush's stint in ESPN found while reading some back HST columns. But funny and poignant prose nonetheless.Rush never knew much about football, anyway. He was dumb and loud, but he has never been anything more or less than a half-bright commentator with an agenda who wanted more than his 15 minutes of bitchy fame. He was greedy, and so was ESPN for hiring him.
Rush Limbaugh is a lame professional Swine and he makes a good living at it. He is like a hired Geek in some traveling backwoods carnival -- the freaks who bite the heads off Chickens -- but Limbaugh is a modernized Geek who thinks he can bite the heads off of people.

Last night I saw a clip of Hannity and Colms in which James Dobson of Focus on the Family was earnestly explaining to Sean about how Spongebob is a predatory Homosexual and I detected what seemed like an incredulous
expression on Sean Hannity's face. Has hell frozen over? Did a lying liar actually find something coming out of the "middle-earth" that most conservatives exist in hard to swallow? Or am I just seeing ghosts? If anyone has any elaboration of said interview I would love to hear it. I only saw the brief clip on the Daily Show.

I think Ann Coulter just called George Bush a moron in her column... Of course, she was being sarcastic, but if I were her, I might quote her (out of context) as saying something like this:
"George Bush really is a moron..."
Hey, she said it, not me.
